Left something in a hotel room? Here’s how to get it back.
Contact the hotel directly as soon as you notice, not the booking site, and give them your room number, checkout date and a precise description of the item. If the hotel publishes its found items online, check that page first: you may be able to spot your item yourself and start a claim without waiting on hold.
Updated
Step 1: Work out what you actually lost, and where
Before calling, reconstruct the details the hotel will ask for: what the item is, its color and brand, where in the room it probably was (the safe, a drawer, under the bed, the bathroom shelf), your room number and the dates of your stay. Chargers, toiletry bags and items in safes are the classic leave-behinds. Housekeeping finds them at turnover, usually within a day of checkout.
Step 2: Check whether the hotel lists found items online
Many hotels now publish found items on a lost and found page, often linked from their website, the checkout email or a QR sign at the front desk. Search it before you call, because you may spot your item yourself. If the hotel uses vFound, its lost and found page can let you:
- Use the page in English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Japanese or Simplified Chinese, not just the hotel’s local language.
- Search with a photo of the item or one like it, such as a product photo of the same charger.
- Describe the loss in your own words in a short chat, and vFound AI fills in the report for you to check and send.
- See possible matches straight away, and get an email each time a likely match is logged over the next 90 days.
Step 3: Call or email the hotel with specifics
If there’s no online page, or nothing matches yet, contact the front desk or housekeeping and ask for lost and found. Be specific: “a white iPhone charger and cable, left plugged in beside the bed, room 412, checked out Sunday morning.” If the item hasn’t surfaced yet, ask them to note your contact details against the description. Items often arrive at the desk a shift or two after checkout.
Be ready to prove ownership for anything valuable. A hotel doing its job will ask for details only the owner would know (the lock-screen photo, the contents of the wallet, the engraving) before releasing anything.
Step 4: Arrange the return
If you’re local, agree a pickup window and bring ID for valuables. If you’ve traveled home, hotels will usually ship at your cost: confirm the courier, the cost and a tracking number in writing. If the hotel uses vFound, your claim runs through a private link, with no account or app. You can message the team there in your own language, or, where the hotel offers it, pick a pickup time within its hours and get an add-to-calendar link and a reminder.
How long do hotels keep lost items?
Ask the hotel for the holding policy and deadline for your specific item. There is no universal period to rely on. Documents, valuables and perishables may follow different procedures. Contact the property promptly, confirm ownership checks and collection or shipping options, and do not assume an item remains available after its deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Should I contact the hotel or the booking site?+
The hotel, always. Booking platforms don’t hold your item and mostly relay messages with delay. Call the front desk or use the hotel’s own lost-and-found page if it has one.
What if the hotel says nothing was found?+
Ask them to record your description and contact details, then follow up after 2 to 3 days. Items surface as rooms turn over and shifts change. Precise descriptions and the room number materially improve the odds.
Will the hotel ship my item internationally?+
Usually yes, at your cost, once ownership is confirmed. Confirm courier, cost and tracking in writing. Some items, such as aerosols and batteries, face shipping restrictions, and the hotel should tell you which.
Why does the hotel ask me to describe my own item in detail?+
That’s verification working in your favor: it stops someone else claiming your belongings. Details only you would know (contents, lock screen, damage) are how good hotels decide a claim is genuine.
Can I search a hotel’s lost and found in my own language?+
Yes, if the hotel’s lost and found page supports it. A vFound page can be used in English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch or Italian, set from your browser or picked by you, and AI keywords in English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Italian can find items logged in another. Otherwise, send your description in the local language as well as your own.
