Lost your wallet? Here’s what to do in the first hour.

Step 1: Report missing cards and secure your accounts

Contact each card issuer immediately using its official app, website or published phone number. If a lock or freeze is available, use it while you contact the issuer, but ask whether the card must be canceled and replaced. A temporary freeze is not a substitute for reporting a card lost or stolen.

• Report each missing card to its issuer; use a temporary lock if available while you contact them.
• Keep the date, time and reference for each report.
• Check recent transactions and report anything you do not recognize.
• Ask the issuer about replacement cards and payments from your phone's wallet.

Step 2: Retrace your steps and list every place you visited

Write down where you’ve been since you last remember having the wallet: shops, restaurants, the gym, a taxi, a bus or train, a friend’s car. Your card transactions and phone location history can fill in gaps. The last place you paid for something is often the best lead, because you had the wallet out.

Check the obvious places properly too: every pocket, bags, car seats and the gap beside them, and the spot where you usually drop your keys.

Step 3: Contact each venue’s lost and found with a precise description

Call or email each place on your list and ask for lost and found. Describe the wallet so it can’t be confused with another: color, material, brand, how it closes, any wear or damage, and a few of the contents. Leave your name, phone number and email so they can reach you if it’s handed in later.

Many venues now publish found items online, so check before you call. Don’t skip a wallet listed without a photo: venues often keep photos that show ID or bank cards private, and on vFound pages, photo auto-fill switches such a photo to staff-only when it reads one. Step 4: Replace your ID and file a police report if you need one

Driver’s licenses, ID cards and residence permits are replaced through the agency that issued them. Check their official website for the process: many let you report the loss and apply online.

A police report isn’t always required for a lost wallet, but it helps if you need to make an insurance claim, if you think it was stolen, or if you later have to prove identity theft. Ask for a reference number and keep it with your notes.

Step 5: Watch for fraud over the following weeks

Keep an eye on your bank and card statements, and be wary of calls or messages that mention your lost wallet, because scammers sometimes use found details to sound convincing. Your bank will never ask for your full PIN or password.
